Things that I see that have gotten lost through the years:
Handwriting - not taught should be regardless of technology. Take a paper that is up and down and turn sideways, now take the paper and turn it 30/45 degrees or half a hand turn - The hand is not meant to write up and down. Something teachers actually knew and taught this once in a different universe. Now print or write script handwriting. If it is iPad turn that too, if you can. Tech people didn't think about it having to move.
Hanging curtains - if the window is 36 inches wide and whatever length - to have fuller curtains you need double the wide 36+36 =72 inches, as length for they should go 3 inches above rod (with pocket for rod or grommets) and below the window, depending if you want longer or shorter but are to go past the window sill, which is normally 6 inches. So measure 3 inches above the window and 6 below for short curtains roughly and the distance between, or start by 3 inches above and measure until 6 inches below. Higher rods ceiling to floor - you measure the curtains going ceiling to floor, allowing for the rod. This does count for overly large windows. Since I see things on the Internet - I am like what the pickle? Handmade curtains have the same application for measurements.
Blinds you decide whether they're in the window sill or cover the window frame to touch the wall and overhang. Measure the width and length and write it down. If they don't make the size go larger and trim them or leave them it be.
Stamps in the US go in the top right corner, you open enough mail and you're like what? As for writing the address, it goes in the middle of the envelope, go out about an inch from left from the middle, and start writing, if you can not write script (cursive), print the address - otherwise it will get lost in the mail..(yes, there people and computer trying to read your unreadable handwriting) Business addresses are addressed differently by business name, person or title of who get it and rest is the same as below.
- John Doe
- 1234 South Whatever Street
- or Building name or number(no building or number leave off)
- Apt or Suite, POB 555,
- City, State, Zip code
What is POB - mail goes to the post office for pick-up, or in a rural area, or Apo, FPO, is a Military post office Box, where again mail is picked up or delivered too. If deployed/stationed in any area, it is still a Military post office box.
Bread clips - work as labels for all the technology that is behind the TV or computer. And multiple cell phone cords, and the USB cord things that they are selling now. If you have issues plastic issues use masking tape. (Why everything seemed to be USB thing, so you can plug them all in end to end not choked yourself) I really have no idea.
Color permanent markers, colored nail polish, or enamel paint - work on keys, outlet plugs, and anywhere else that is needed to be able this see this "side Up" or this where to fill (coffee pot, French press, water line), too (on the outside of the container, not in it.) This work on plugs for in kitchen were lighting in the worst, or vision impairments.
If you don't have the luxury of newer cabinet drawers with fancy hinges and are tired of hearing drawers and cabinets banging, especially in an apartment- go get felt sticker pads for the size that you need. Put them on the edges of the drawer or door. One will work, two if you want your sanity have kids or grandkids.
Toilet paper - The part that tears should face you. Why because otherwise it will unravel and then it is everywhere, if you don't want every piece of Toilet Paper it will be touched everywhere, Literally when shit happens you don't want it all over the floor and on your bits or bottoms. And no the toilet paper does not refill itself or the seat goes down by itself (unless you have a fancy luxury seat), or unless you like your bottom swimming in the middle of the night, after a wild crazy Las Vegas night out. You will find yourself doing yoga. Namaste, you are now bowing in a whole new way. If you have not learned to keep toilet paper on hand- maybe you like standing in line with it from when the world shut down a few years back and are one of the people who bought a 9 years supply and tried to make money with it. Bad joke - but happened.
Doors don't close themselves, meaning you close the door with physical hands and do not let it shut itself, stand open, or slam, so if there is a storm - bye-bye door and it is now a Wizard of OZ scene.
If you don't know, ask someone who knows something, at least google it. If you don't know any smart people.
Yes, can you learn to cook by watching YT. Chefs did not become chefs for their personalities, thank god some do, otherwise, we have a world of boring chefs.
Yes, you can put foil in the air fryer, as long as it is not over the sides and NO you can not use parchment paper it will catch fire. Yes, you get a shortened microwave by a fragment of Foil. And yes, glass can shatter in the microwave, if it is not tempered glass or microwave-safe.
Yes, olive oil or coconut oil for work as a quick fix for sticky key locks in doors- WD40 is what is really needed. Don't over spray otherwise it will be everywhere. And you will fall on your butt, this goes for cooking spray if you don't spray over the sink or solid surface. It is not fail-safe to go in one direction.
No, you never leave cutting knives in a sink, they will degrade. Buy a knife sharper. Wipe with hot water, dish soap, and a dishcloth. The dishwasher will degrade them too.
At this point in the world, you can google or YouTube anything and someone would have posted something regarding it. Even stuff don't want to know or things that one would think are common sense. Just agree that there is no common sense and live longer and maybe happier.
Yes, you can freeze most food. Don't know google it. (no fast food does not freeze well because not is not real food) I Google it and apparently, you can, unless it is a science project, well good luck on that endeavor.
Yes, your real wood furniture will get water stains without a coaster. Fake wood will warp.
Yes, your neighbors in the apartment next to you can hear "all the noise you make", because there is only 6 inches between you and them and your indiscretions, if it is only drywall. Most complex are grandfather in except certain codes. Installation of soundproofing and acoustic is not one of them.
Things that don't clean themselves, dishes, trash, laundry, floors, counters, and the bathroom or your bedroom, or the things that you left behind on the floor, chair, counter, the sofa, etc, Ode to kids... or your missing shoe.. And no Google, echo, or AI can not find your missing shoe for you. (Not yet, at least, or a smart house, no power no smart house)
People who don't cook at home, sorry, but I experienced this. They have no idea where things are in the kitchen, even when put them, there. Their method of cooking is just as unorganized. They bang every single thing as they go along. That includes not cleaning, and putting things back as they go, which is a chaotic mess.
Cake batters, and brownies with air bubbles - tap on the counter to release the bubbles. Lopsided cake, bread - the oven is not level, you have to turn it half thru the baking, to hopefully, not have a wonky bake good.
No, you don't need fancy gizmos to cook, your ancestors didn't. Hand stirring is needed, for when and if you need to pick yourself up off the floor because you over spraying cooking spray. Hopefully not, we live weird world.
Nuts, for the nutty. Storage/store in the refrigerator, (refrig.) Why, because nuts have natural fats and oils in them. They go rancid (bad) - cold allows longer shelf life. Peanut butter - I don't, but you decide for yourself. Not sure smell them, No sense of smell, taste one. Your brain will say get it out of my mouth.
Herbs, and not smokable ones. Know your herbs because most herbs are natures medicine. They sit on the shelf and only are used for cooking when they are far better and more used to help cure illness or help alleviate symptoms. I am not a doctor, but there are natural medicines and less costly cures for things. If not sure, buy a book and learn something.
Tea's, there is a tea for everything, if you look. Another of nature's natural medicines. Know, what season you are in - why, because maybe it is cold season, maybe I should take more zinc or vitamin C. this time of the year, spring or Fall, or another herb. What about allergies - falling leaves or blooming, depending on where you live? The Ancestor did not have Big Pharm or promote cure-alls. Well maybe some did, but with some quackery, comes knowledge of your options. Again I am not a doctor. Do your research.
My son asked me how do I get all this kitchen stuff, I said, it is normally to passed down to you. Everyone has extra stuff or Grandparents who don't cook for the entire family anymore, until you can buy your own, or save up for stuff that you want to buy because you think you need that thing when you really don't and it is useless clutter, taking up space.
And there are meals for one or two people on YouTube or the internet. I look at several recipes because I know what I like, taste-wise wise and so do you, or live a little, try something different, or another country. I told my sons that if you plan to travel and learn about their food, everywhere does not have the food you grew up with.
You can not cut a straight line when cutting baked goods, keep a plastic ruler in the kitchen to use. Cannot get baked goods off parchment, run a knife between the paper and the baked goods, slowly. Never, never, use wax paper - it is only good for wrapping things like lunch, short-term food for travel, or tracing pictures - not really a useful item, save your money.
There are thousands of other things, but these are a few of the odd things that I see or why is this lost to aethers.
